Side Effects Of Insomnia Can Be Dangerous
April 10th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedInsomnia affects nearly everyone at one time or another. Most of us will suffer from temporary insomnia, also known as transient insomnia. This type of sleep disruption will last a few nights to a few weeks, and can generally be attributed to a particular event or stress. Chronic insomnia affects a smaller percentage of people, but it can be a lifelong issue for some.
While insomnia is not usually a serious issue, some of the side effects of insomnia can become quite dangerous. For example, one of the side effects of insomnia can be an increased risk of having a traffic accident while commuting to work. People who suffer from sleep deprivation are generally not as quick to react in situations, which can lead to increased accidents on the job or at home as well. Side effects of insomnia can also include a difficulty keeping a job, marital stress and other relationship problems, an increase in alcohol consumption, and an overall feeling of malaise. It can also weaken your immune system, making you more prone to illness. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Caffeine A Cause Of Insomnia?
March 7th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedSkip That Last Cup After Dinner
Are you a serious insomniac, sometimes going for more than 24 hours without sleep? Try eliminating caffeine from your diet. Caffeine is a stimulant that can cause a person to stay up when all they really want to do is sleep. Could it be, if you can’t find sleep, that caffeine is the cause of your insomnia?
Many people drink coffee after large meals, especially dinner. Waiters will often ask if anyone wants coffee after they eat. Digestion takes energy and people often become tired after they eat. For this reason, people drink coffee to perk them up. However, having this cup of coffee, or two or three, after dinner can wreak havoc on your sleeping schedule. That coffee could be the cause of your insomnia. With all of that caffeine surging through your body, there’s no way that you can lay down and fall asleep. Your heart and head are racing and your legs feel as though there are things crawling on them. You’re up and you’re ready to go, even though you know that you should be winding down so that your body can recharge.

What is Your Definition of Insomnia?
March 3rd, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedIf you were asked to define insomnia, what would you say? Some people say they are suffering from insomnia if they have trouble falling asleep for a night or two. Others would say that is is waking up too early. Let’s examine four basic types of insomnia.
Difficulty Falling Asleep
Difficulty falling asleep is one definition of insomnia. Some people fall asleep quickly, and some take more time. However, know that it is not how long it takes you to fall asleep that is truly important; but rather it is how much trouble you have doing so.
If you usually fall asleep within minutes, and one night in particular you find yourself ruminating about something for a half hour after going to bed, then you may be experiencing insomnia. Someone else might normally take a half hour or more to fall asleep, so that would not be insomnia to him or her.

Exercise – A Natural Insomnia Cure
February 27th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedExercising has many benefits. Here are 3 of them:
- helps you lose weight
- gets you more energy
- helps you fall asleep
“What?”, you ask, “Are you serious about that 3rd one, Richard?”
Yes, I am. Studies have shown that people, particularly women, who regularly exercise during the day, sleep longer and better at night. So, before you reach for the sleeping pills why not try going for a run, taking a trip to the gym, or signing up for a yoga class.
Consider this. Many people have trouble sleeping because they are overly stressed. The worst part about this is that sleep deprivation can increase your cortisol levels, which makes you feel more stressed. It can also make you irritable and less able to deal with stressful situations. This is why most insomniacs have increased levels of stress hormones. While exercise makes these hormones rise initially, after several hours the levels fall. These hormones levels actually become lower than before you exercised and lower than they would be if you hadn’t worked out. Regular exercise can end the vicious sleep-stress cycle once and for all.

Insomnia: I Just Can’t Sleep!
February 20th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedInsomnia is a sleeping disorder which prevents sleep for extended periods of time. In some cases it can even prevent a person from being able to fall asleep altogether. Some of the causes of insomnia are:
- diet
- stress
- drugs or alcohol
- certain feelings such as fear or dread
- an overactive mind
- other physical reasons, such as excruciating pain
Whatever the reason, to cure this sleeping disorder, it’s important to understand exactly what is causing it.
Is It Something You’re Doing?
The first thing you should do if you find yourself lying in bed, unable to find sleep is to determine if maybe there’s something you are doing throughout the day that may be causing insomnia. For instance, if you drink coffee up until nine o’clock at night, you may need to look no further as to what’s causing your disorder. Caffeine, especially at night, is a huge culprit behind this sleep preventing disorder. There are also certain foods that can keep you awake. If you’re not sure about your diet, that what you could be consuming throughout the day may be causing your disorder, do your research or talk to a dietitian. Having that last cup of coffee could be costing you hours and hours of necessary rest and relaxation.
If you are on medication, ask your doctor if the drug you’re taking is causing your insomnia. Some illegal drugs also cause insomnia, especially amphetamines or uppers. Alcohol, too, can cause this sleeping disorder. It all comes down to monitoring exactly what is going into your body. Most often, it’s what you’re consuming that is causing your insomnia.
Of course, if you have a big meeting coming up and you’re under a lot of stress or you are dealing with some sort of extreme guilt or even if you’re really afraid of something, these, too, can cause insomnia.
If you are stress free, besides the fact that you’re stressing that you can’t sleep, try an experiment. Try eating different foods or try eliminating certain things from your diet. If you suddenly find yourself sleeping like a baby, you’ve found your culprit. The key is to listen to your body. Your body needs sleep to recharge and you need sleep so that you’re not such a bear to your coworkers in the morning. Do yourself a favor and find out what’s causing your insomnia.
